Asteroid 99942 Apophis passes about 19,600 miles above Earth's surface, closer than geosynchronous satellites, and is visible to the naked eye across much of the planet.

Impact probability peaked at 2.7 percent on December 27, 2004, the highest ever recorded for an object this size, and was eliminated the same day when archival images extended the observation arc. The 2036 scenario was cleared in 2006 and the 2068 scenario in 2021. NASA states there is no risk of Apophis impacting Earth for at least 100 years. Diameter roughly 1,100 to 1,500 feet.

Asteroid 2024 YR4 close approach. It briefly carried the highest Earth-impact probability on record for an object its size, then a 4.3 percent Moon-impact probability.

Both risks are now ruled out. Earth impact was eliminated in February 2025 using JWST data. The Moon impact, which peaked at 4.3 percent and drew serious debris modeling, was eliminated on March 5, 2026 after JWST observations in late February; it will miss the lunar surface by about 13,200 miles. A great deal of stale coverage still says 4 percent chance of hitting the Moon.

The 1910 apparition produced real mass panic after spectroscopy found cyanogen in the tail and the press speculated Earth would pass through it. Gas masks and anti-comet pills sold widely. Nothing happened. Expect the 2061 return to generate a fresh cycle.

Gary Kronk then found Chinese observations of the same comet from 69 BCE and 188 CE; Marsden confirmed them, and a 2,000-year observation arc showed the orbit is stable with no threat for at least two millennia. The 2126 pass will be about 14.2 million miles away.
